I went for a bit of a shoot at Oxford Falls on Sydney’s Northern Beaches today. It’s quite a tricky place to shoot at due to the mixed lighting conditions, strong sunlight filtering through the trees makes everything heavily contrasted. If you are lucky though you can find spots where the sunlight will work well to light the rider. A little bit of flash to separate the rider from the background and these are the results.
A big thanks to Josh from walking up and down for me all day.

Dirt Session: Part 2
I spent this morning up shooting dirt jumping at Castle Cove again. This week the big line was up and running again so I concentrated on shooting that. I’ve tried to include a shot or two from everyone. Hope I haven’t missed anyone. The thing about shooting at a new place is that when the shoot is over I always end up leaving with plenty of new angles and shots to think about. Guess I shall just have to go back again when I next get the chance.
Dirt Jump Sessions
A few shots from a short shoot at Castle Cove dirt jumps on the weekend. These were just really a bit of a test run for next weekend. I used a very lazy light set-up by just throwing a couple of flashes on the ground and pointing them up. Not optimal but I quite like the way a couple of them turned out.
Next week I am hoping to shoot the big kickers and spend a bit more time getting things set.
Downhill Mountain Biking at Oxford Falls
Yesterday I met up with local rider Nick Turnbull at the Oxford Falls downhill track here on Sydney’s Northern Beaches area for a bit of mountain biking. Its a short track but with a few nice jumps and obstacles. We also met up with another local rider Tom Sanders. Despite being a Friday afternoon we had the track to ourselves so we had plenty of time to set up shots. Here’s a selection from the afternoon’s shoot.
Mountain Biking and Flashing
With studying lighting at school I thought I should take my new found knowledge into the field. A friend, John Harbord, has been kind enough to volunteer his skills on a mountainbike. We took the show up to Oxford Falls in Sydney’s Northern Beaches area. Also met up with another friend, Josh a BMXer, at the nearby Freedom Jumps. The following is a few of the shots.
Easter Weekend
Had a great weekend over Easter. Spent my Saturday at the Five Dock jam. It was a great day with some very impressive riding, huge airs and a great atmosphere. On the Easter Sunday and Monday I spent my afternoons down at the Bondi bowl shooting skating. I had never really spent any time there before as it’s a reasonable length of trip to get there from here and I figured the scene there was as weak as it is here. Sunday afternoons down there are great though and the scene is very much alive and kicking. The bowl is a great shape and size and the park is not over-run by kids on scooters. As you can see in the shots below the spectacle attracts quite a crowd who all gather round to watch. I am looking forward to heading back down there this coming Sunday and shooting a heap more shots. Continue reading →
