About

Richard McGibbon, Sydney adventure and action sports photographer

I’m a Sydney-based photographer, and I shoot adventure sports: mountain biking, trail running, snow sports and anything else that moves fast outdoors. I love it.

I’m the co-founder of Outer Image Collective, a team that covers mountain bike, adventure racing and trail running events across NSW, Queensland and Victoria.

How I got here

My dad was a professional photographer. He bought me my first SLR when I was about ten: a Russian Zenit that weighed about as much as a house brick. I took it everywhere.

I grew up skating and surfing on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, then went looking for adventure and ended up in St. Anton, Austria, working in a pizzeria. I didn’t start snowboarding until I was 26. My pipe dream of being a pro snowboarder ended with a badly broken leg, and with the fact that I wasn’t nearly good enough. While I was recovering, I bought my first digital SLR and started shooting skiers instead. That turned out to be the better call.

These days I find myself inspired by other people’s adventures, which usually end with me planning a trip of my own. If my photos get someone else out the door, that’s the job done.
