Tarragona Cathedral, 360

In the heart of the old city quarter in Tarragona, Spain lies its beautiful cathedral. The buildings in and around here date from Roman times through to present day. Construction on the Cathedral started in 1184 and was built upon a christian balisca which itself was previously buillt upon a 10th century mosque. The stone work on and around the cathedral is quite amazing in its intricate details. It seems that all ages are represented it its gargoyles and stone figures. There is even signs of early grafitti showing in some of the stones.

Fes el Bali, June 2010

Fes el Bali

This month’s calendar image is Morocco’s Imperial city of Fez, or more specifically Fes el Bali, the old walled medina of Fez. The shot was taken from the Merenid Tombs overlooking the old medina. Fez is one of my favourite cities for losing myself in. It is one of those cities where around every corner there seems to be something new to explore.

The medieval capital of Morocco and a great city of high Islamic civilization Fez is Morocco’s third largest city. It is one of the country’s four “imperial cities,” the others being Rabat, Marrakech and Meknes. The sprawling maze of Fes el Bali  is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has the honour of being the best-preserved old city in the Arab world. No cars or trucks can enter the narrow streets and transports of goods through the Medina is provided by donkeys, carriages, and motorbikes.

The city, founded on the banks of the Fez River by Idris I in 789, was populated by Muslims, Moriscos (Moors of Spanish or Portuguese descent) and Jews. It was a scientific and religious center where both Muslims and Christians from Europe came to study. The University of Al-Karaouine, founded in AD 859, is the oldest continuously functioning university in the world.

Fez was a major trading post of the Barbary Coast of North Africa and was at the end of a north-south gold trading route from Timbuktu in Mali. It was a prime manufacturing location for leather goods and its tanneries are today still use techniques used in the middle ages.

St. Anton 360

St. Anton 360 Panorama

On one of the clear patches of weather in St. Anton my wanderings took me past the waterfall above town. This seemed like a good place to go for a spin with a 360 panorama image. The spot offers a great view over St. Anton and the mountains and ski fields to the north.

Austria

Through the Forest

What a wet time in Austria, 4 weeks of rain and when it wasn’t raining, snow. I think in total I had 2 days of clear skies. The heavy cloud cover really limited the amount of landscape photography that was possible but I took the opportunity to shoot some black and white, something I usually shy away from. When the clouds lifted slightly they started to tease me with glimpses of the mountain tops. I took a few chances in the breaks between the rain and set off on short walks. More often these walks took me into the forests as these heavy overcast days leave a nicely balanced light throughout without the harsh contrast that dapples the forest on sunny days.

I spent a few days around Brixlegg, a village about 300kms from St. Anton heading towards Vienna. My main reason for this was the excellent skatepark called The Cradle. I shall write a post later with more shots and information regarding this. (more…)

Sunset over the Sydney Skyline

A friend recently asked me about screensavers and wallpapers. Apparently all my wallpaper links had died somewhere along the line. What a great chance to start fresh. I thought I might as well double it up with a desktop calendar. So at the end of each month I shall release an image to be used as the next months calendar. Below are the links to different screen resolutions. Simply click on the screen resolution link that best suits your screen, wait for the image to finish loading, right click then save image as.

This month Sunset over the Sydney Skyline. This image is part of a large panorama showing more of the skyline. The image was taken from Bradleys Head in the national park below Mosman on the north side of the harbour. One of the things that I really like about Sydney is its close proximity to the surrounding national parks and just how easy it is to get away from all the hustle and bustle of big city living.

Anyways. Enjoy.
